The locality was named Făget by the beech forests in the region, mentioned in documents under different forms: Fagyath 1548, Faczat 1594, Facsá 1595, castrum Fachiad, Fachat, Fachad, Fachiat 1595, Fachyath, Fachyath 1597, Facyad 1603, arx Fachaitt, Faczatt 1607, Fachiath 1608, Facsat 1616, appidum Oláh Facset, Wallachisch Fatschet 1808, German Facset, Vallách Facset 1828, Német-Facset, Oláh-Facset 1851, Facsét 1907, Făget 1918.
From the six localities that carry the same name, from Iaşi, Alba, Bacău, Dolj, Prahova and Timiş Counties, Făget from Banat is the most known.
It is mentioned for the first time in 1548 in the context of a donation made by the aristocrat Ioan de Bozwar to his daughter Dorotheea, at the castle of nobleman Iacob Bekes from Făget. Even if the locality was attested quite late in documents, compared to other localities from the area, Făget became soon well known to historians, foreign or Romanian visitors, political and cultural important persons who came in contact with the place. Its location and intense spiritual activity, the famous fairs caught the attention of many travelers in Transilvania and Banat. |
