Settlements of the area Árpádhalom

It is situated 25 kilometers from Szentes, Between Nagymágocs and Gádoros, next to Mágocs-streamlet. It was an inhabited area even in the age of Árpád. Thanks for the Károlyi family, the most cultivated farmland and manor granary - designed by Miklós Ybl- were built in the area of the village. Other important buildings are: The Roman-Catholic wooden beamed church, which was built in 1910, and the castle, which was built on the request of Lady Count Lipót Berchtold. The monument of János Székács wheat-improver is located in this castle. Another value of the settlement is that the path of the Lowland Blue Tour runs through it and the Wild-Farm of Árpádhalom National Hunting Society is stationed here, as well. For those who like fishing, there is a fish-pond where people can go boating, too.

 

Derekegyház

Derekegyház is located southeast of and 11 kilometers far from Szentes, next to Kórógy-streamlet. From 1765, this settlement became the possession of the Károlyi family and they built an impressive Baroque styled castle here. At present, the building is a home for the elderly and it is declared a historic building together with its park. In the beginning of the 20th century, the heirs of Count Weis-Mafréd owned the building, then they built a mansard storey over it. Due to its present function, only some parts of it can be visited. The Kórógy-stream and its area is an ideal place for fishing and taking an excursion. It is a prominent fact that Derekegyháza is the richest in forests in Csongrád county and there are a lot of small games here. The traditional hunting is represented by the mansion-like Hunting House of the village.

 

 

 

 

Eperjes

This village with its 800 citizens is located 25 kilometers from Szentes, close to the border of Békés county. The wasteland of Eperjes guarantees an enjoyable pastime with its untouched, sodic areas and protected animals. The settlement provides excellent opportunities for hunting.

 

 

 

 

 

Fábiánsebestyén

Fábiánsebestyén is situated 18 kilometers from Szentes and it has 2500 citizens. The first citizens were Cumanians. The attractive force of Fábiánsebestyén is its famous equestrian culture. The Nóniusz horse breeding has a past of several decades. The excellent animals are not just improved by breeding but the town has developed a nationally known sports culture. The Equestrian Days, which traditionally takes place on 1st July, is one of the biggest tourist attractions of the spring. The first race of the National Driving Championship is organized here.

Nagymágocs

Nagymágocs was first mentioned as "Magoch" in 1426. It is located 19 kilometers from Szentes and it has 3700 citizens. It was named after the Szente-Nagymágocs clan who were the first owners of this area.

The castle, which is bigger than the one in Derekegyháza, was built in 1896-97. It has eclectic-neobaroque design, and emphasized by a middle set-out. The medieval Magoch monastery was destroyed during the process of construction. The area offers fishing and hunting but the biggest attraction is the Károlyi Castle. At present the building functions as a home for elderly and it has a 40 hectare arboretum-like park. The park has a very beautiful English-garden with rare ancient oak trees and pine families.

The nearby 10 hectare lake which belongs to the castle adds the scenic view of the area. The internal sections of the castle such as, the entrance-hall, winter garden, library and reception-room offers visitors a unique experience, as well. There is a three-storey granary opposite the entrance of the park, which was built by Miklós Ybl. An interesting fact is that the interior of the building was made from solely wood.

 
Nagytőke

Nagytőke is located 17 kilometres from Szentes, near the Tisza-Körös mouth of river, next to the Veker-channel and Tőke-streamlet. Its real force of attraction is the surrounding water world, fishing and the beauty of the Tisza- and Körös river bank and river flats.

This settlement is situated 8 kilometres from Szentes and it is known as the "village of waters". It is a real fishing paradise thanks to the natural beauties of the Kórógy lake, Ládor lake the Kórógy and Kurca small rivers. Beside fishing, the place offers activity like boating. The village is rich in popular architectural monuments, as well.

Bácskatopolya (Serbia and Montenegro, 1969)
It lies in-between the Danube and the Tisza in the south, 40 kilometres away from Subotica, the number of the inhabitants is approximately 15 thousand. It is an agricultural settlement.

Bunol (Spain, 1988)
A town situated in the Province of Valencia, the number of the inhabitants is approximately 10 thousand. It used to be famous for its cement manufacturing factories, but nowadays it has acquired international fame because of the TOMATINA, the peculiar tomato-throwing feast.

Markgröningen (Germany, 1989)
A genuine German town from the Middle Ages, situated near Stuttgart, the number of the inhabitants is approximately 15 thousand. The most popular event is the SchaJerlauf in August, the traditional folk feast of the shepherds' guild.

Dumbravita-Újszentes (Rumania, 1990)
The village lies 4 kilometres away from Timisoara, founded by 133 Calvinist families from Szentes in 1891/92. The number of the inhabitants today is approximately 3500 thousand. Petőfi Sándor's memorial counts as a place of pilgrimage for the Hungarian population of the area.

Sankt Augustin (Germany, 1993)
A settlement on the Rhine opposite Bonn, founded not earlier than 30 years ago. The settlement, which was created by joining four villages is characterised by a modern town centre, an active sports life and a youthful vigour.

Hof Ashqelon (Israel, 1999)
The district is located north of the Gaza Strip in the vicinity of the town of Asquelon. It consists of nine settlements and has a 14,000-strong population. The area is well known for its advanced horticulture. Its dwellers, living on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, make their living out of tourism and horticulture. One of its curious features is that it has such small settlements, which were established by Jewish immigrants from Hungarian-speaking regions, thus many people still speak Hungarian here.

Kaarina (Finnland, 2001)
Kaarina lies on the shores of the Gulf of Finland, in the southwest part of Finland. The citizens here live in a town with a dispersed settlement structure. In a beautiful, forest clad land, they respect nature and are environmentally conscious. Most of them work in the nearby city of Turku.

Skierniewice (Poland , 2003)
This city is situated in the middle of Poland, 70 km south-west of Warsaw. It has a population of 50,000. It is one of the most important centres of horticulture in Poland. A research centre of vegetable and fruit cultivation of international prestige is also located here. Apart from an advanced agricultural sector, its industry is significant too. This industry is presently undergoing radical structural change.
