Szentes is a youngish, lowland-town located in Csongrád county, by the bank of the Tisza river. In the life of the town, the plentifulness of sunshine and thermal water is determinant. The Kurca river gives its unique aspect. The Széchenyi park, surrounded by the Kurca river, is the widest park of Szentes and a botanical and cultural-historical monument. It has been a nature reserve since 1953, plane-trees, conker-, ash-, lime-, maple trees, marsh cypress, black pines, pedunculate oak trees can be found in its precious botanical garden.
The natural beauty of the Tisza and Körös rivers, rich vegetation and fauna greatly contributes to the unique natural endowment of Szentes.
The 16 hectare park of the regional hospital has local protection, it was made in the 30's. The Kurca channel flows among pine trees, marsh cypress and maidenhair trees in the park. The first thermal well of the town can be found here, and it is hidden in an Oriental-style pagoda.
On the confines of the town there is the second biggest thermal-lake, which also proves the excellent geothermal conditions of the town.
As a lowland-town, the plough-land cultivation is characteristic which determines the external view of the town. The wheat, maize, sunflower plots, plastic tunnels and the unique desolate winter plains provide a real place of interest.
The small region also shows the characteristic view of a lowland landscape with the world of farms, pits, Tisza bank and the valley of Körös, belonging to this area.
The Tisza, Körös, Kórógy, Veker and Kurca rivers are popular fishing areas. The Fishing Society of Szentes keeps an eye on and control the population of fish. The most frequent species of fish are carp, pike perch, catfish, sheat-fish, pike. Beside fishing, hunting is also a popular recreation and it is supported by the incomparable natural endowment of Szentes and its area. Mainly roe deer, rabbit, fox, wild-boar, pheasant, and wild-duck are hunted in this area.
The experts can admire the the hidden places of the Tisza and Körös river flats, the untouched sodic plant communities of upper-Kurca, the flora and fauna of the gallery forests by the river banks and the living world of the lowland plains.
The areas beside Kurca river give home to numeral water- and reedy bird species, such as grebe, heron, spotted crake, water-hen, coot and reed warbler. In winter, native and northern guest birds - which live through the winter- can be seen, for example: cormorant, swan, arctic duck, red-shank, sandpiper, kingfisher.
The Cserebökény lowland plain is located in the outskirts of Szentes, which is a mosaic of the Körös-Maros National Park area of competence. Its avifauna and lowland plane lawn are important natural attractive force. Its most important values are marsh pant communities, sodic lawns, and the avifauna. The presence of 231bird species was observed, of which 15 are highly protected. The most precious species of birds: Pallid harrier, red-footed falcon, ferruginous duck, stilt, avocet, godwit, redshank, little tern, corncrake, bustard, stone curlew, common roller.
A protected area named Zsupsziget, is the part of the Landscape-Protection Area of Pusztaszer. Its manager is the Kiskunság National Park. The northern part of the Labodár backwater - inside the administrative area of Szentes - is highly protected, with regard to heron species: little heron, purple heron, common heron, night heron.
