Education

Szentes has nine elementary schools, where besides general primary education, there are also specialised courses in Music, Foreign Languages, Mathematics, Arts and Sports, where students learning these attend a high number of lessons in these subjects. In Petőfi Sándor Primary School music has been taught since 1957 with the Kodály method. The choirs of the schools have given successful performances abroad several times (Celje, Bückeburg, Sankt Augustin, Wolfennbüttel, to name but a few). In teaching Art the Damjanich Utcai and the Koszta József Primary Schools are outstanding. The latter is affiliated with a school in Austria: the Tiroler Landhauptschule Niederndorf. In the junior section of the Deák Ferenc Primary School the children are educated by the Freinet method. The school also has its own observatory. Sports is taught in a high number of lessons at Klauzál Gábor Primary School. As special training there is a dyslexia prevention class in the first year. Children living on the outskirts of the town are educated at Berekháti Primary School. Saint Elisabeth Catholic Primary School achieved outstanding results in teaching Mathematics, and French as a foreign language. The school maintains permanent relationships with schools in France. At Kiss Bálint Calvinist Primary School special courses are offered in Information Technology and Drama. The Primary School and Students' Home of Csongrád County Municipality was established in 1972 and deals with education of the mentally handicapped and cares for children who are under state custody.

There are five secondary schools; a nationwide acknowledged institution is Horváth Mihály Public High School founded in 1859, which specialises in language education and established the first drama faculty in the country. Its students were awarded prizes in international drama festivals. The other secondary schools are: Boros Sámuel High School of Economics and Health (1937), Bartha János Horticultural Vocational School (1940), Pollák Antal Technical School of Electronics (1963) and Zsoldos Ferenc Technical Vocational School. Students with a permanent address outside Szentes are accommodated in the Terney Béla Hostel for Secondary School Students founded at the beginning of the 1950s.

Since 1955 there has been music education at Lajtha László School of Music. The teachers of the school are regular participants and organisers of the town's vivid musical life. They take part in and manage the nationally and internationally acknowledged Bárdos Lajos Mixed Choir and the award winning Town Wind Band.
