Tourism

Among the tourist attractions of Szentes are the natural and artificial waters. The Tisza, the Körös and the other waters in the area are suitable for bathing, angling, water tours (e.g. International Tour on the Tisza), excursions by boat and pursuing different water sports. The re-opened shipping service route between Csongrád and Szeged provides an opportunity for a nice cruise. About 5 kilometres away from the town there is a site suitable for camping at the bank of the Tisza. The local anglers' club continuously supervises the quality and quantity of the fish stock.

The area has a wide variety of birds. The Kurca which divides the town into two provides dwelling place for water and reed birds because of its rich vegetation at the sides. Around the 122 hectare Lake TermáI, which is 5 kilometres outside the town, ornithologists have observed 172 bird species since 1983. A bicycle-path leads to the lake. The 'Cserebökény Pustas', a part of the plains located north-east to, south-east of the town has belonged to the Körös-Maros National Park since 1997. Almost 200 bird species have been identified in the area. The groves and parks - Széchenyi Grove, Heroes' Wood, Hospital Park - inside the town also provide nesting places for several bird species.

The fields and woods within the extended boundaries of the city are rich in game, hunting goes back a long way. The hunting ground belonging to Szentes is shared by three hunting clubs. Among the big game roe-deer is the most common, but there are also boars and red deer. More characteristic of the hunting-grounds is the small game (hare and pheasant).

In several regions of Hungary among them Szentes, horses, horse husbandry, including selective breeding and horse sports have always been treasured. Horse traditions are maintained by the Ecser-Dónát Corporation. On its Cserebökény site a cart stable and several buggies and a stud farm of 50 horses can be seen and there are coach rides available. Those wishing to ride horses may turn to the St. László Horsing Club.
