Considering the area covered by Pietroasa, it enters the large commune’s category, but by population it’s a small community with only 1222 inhabitants. Sitauted in a high hill area, it covers 15.646 hectares, of which the forest is 12.906 hectares.
The main source of income for the people is agriculture, animal breeding and tree growing, but the activities that developed the community were the manufacturing of mill stones (Pietroasa is the main supplier for the region of Banat and a part of Ardeal) and winning of timber. After the railway was removed, these activities diminished. At the present, the local people benefit from the beautiful location and develop agrotourism in their area. Also, there are people who bought land and built holiday houses after visiting the area. The Forest Department of Coşava works in winning of timber but on a small scale. The commerce in the area is restrained to food and industrial products of small value. |
